How to Clean a Washing Machine (and Its Drain): A Florida Homeowner’s Routine

How to Clean a Washing Machine (and Its Drain): A Florida Homeowner's Routine | BSP1 Plumbing

Quick answer: Deep-clean a washing machine once a month: run an empty hot cycle with washer cleaner or two cups of white vinegar, wipe the door gasket and detergent drawer, clear the drain pump filter, and leave the door open between loads. If the machine drains fine but water comes up out of the standpipe behind it or the laundry room floor gets wet during the spin cycle, the drain line is clogged — that is a plumber job, not a washer job.

The laundry standpipe is the most-clogged drain in many Central Florida homes: lint, detergent residue and hard-water scale.

Why washing machines get smelly in Florida

Heat, humidity and hard water. Front-load machines seal tightly, so moisture stays in the gasket; cold-water washes and low-suds detergents leave residue; and Orlando-area water leaves mineral scale in the drum and hoses. The result is the sour smell that transfers to towels. The fix is routine, not products.

The monthly deep-clean routine

  1. Run a cleaning cycle. Use the “Tub Clean” program if the machine has one, or the hottest, longest cycle. Add a washer cleaner tablet, or two cups of white vinegar in the drum; some manufacturers prefer bleach — check the manual.
  2. Wipe the gasket. On front-loaders, pull back the rubber door seal and wipe the folds with a cloth and diluted vinegar. Remove hair, coins and the gray film.
  3. Soak the detergent drawer. Pull it out, soak in hot water, scrub the softener compartment where gel builds up.
  4. Clear the drain pump filter. Behind the small door at the bottom front of most front-loaders. Put a towel and a shallow pan down, open the cap slowly, remove lint, hair ties and coins. Do this every one to two months.
  5. Leave the door and drawer open between loads so the drum dries.

Clean the drain and the hoses, too

  • Drain hose: make sure it is not pushed more than 6–8 inches into the standpipe and is not kinked. A hose jammed deep in the pipe siphons water back into the drum.
  • Standpipe: pour a kettle of hot water down it once a month to soften detergent sludge. Never use chemical drain cleaner here — it sits in the P-trap and corrodes it.
  • Supply hoses: rubber hoses should be replaced every 5 years; braided stainless hoses are a cheap insurance policy against a flooded laundry room.

Replace rubber supply hoses every five years — a burst washer hose is one of the most common water damage claims in Florida.

Signs the drain, not the washer, is the problem

  • Water rises in the standpipe and spills onto the floor during the spin cycle
  • The utility sink next to the washer fills when the machine drains
  • A gurgling sound from a nearby floor drain or toilet
  • The machine drains slowly even after you cleaned the pump filter

A washer pumps out 15–20 gallons in a couple of minutes; a laundry drain with lint and scale buildup cannot keep up. We clear the laundry line with a drain machine, and in homes where the laundry shares a line with the kitchen, grease is often the real culprit — hydro-jetting cleans the full pipe wall so it does not come back in three months. See our drain cleaning page for what the visit involves.

Washer in the garage? A note for Central Florida homes

Many homes here have the washer in the garage with a standpipe that drains into the main line near the cleanout. If that standpipe backs up, it is often the first sign of a main sewer line problem, because it is the lowest drain in the house. Do not ignore it — a camera inspection is cheap compared with a backup into the house.

Frequently asked questions

How often should I deep-clean my washing machine?

Monthly for the cleaning cycle and gasket; every one to two months for the drain pump filter. In Florida’s humidity, more often is better than less.

Can I use bleach and vinegar together?

Never. Use one or the other in separate cycles. Mixing them creates toxic chlorine gas.

Why does water come out of the standpipe when the washer drains?

The laundry drain line or its P-trap is partially clogged with lint and detergent sludge, so it cannot accept water as fast as the washer pumps it. It needs to be cleared mechanically.

Do you install washer boxes and standpipes?

Yes — we install and replace laundry boxes, shutoff valves, standpipes and drain lines, and we add a proper trap and vent when a garage laundry was never plumbed correctly.
