Dishwasher Not Draining? How to Clean It — and When It Is a Plumbing Problem

Dishwasher Not Draining? How to Clean It — and When It Is a Plumbing Problem | BSP1 Plumbing

Quick answer: Most dishwashers that stop draining are not broken — the filter is clogged, the drain hose is kinked, the air gap is full of gunk, or a new garbage disposal still has its knockout plug in. Clean those four things first. If the kitchen sink also drains slowly, or water backs up into the dishwasher when the sink runs, the problem is in the kitchen drain line, and that is when you call a plumber.

Kitchen sink plumbing with dishwasher drain connection under the counter
The dishwasher drains through the same line as your kitchen sink — a slow sink means a slow dishwasher.

Step 1: Clean the dishwasher filter (5 minutes)

Remove the bottom rack. In the floor of the tub you will find a round cylinder filter and, on most models, a flat mesh screen around it. Twist the cylinder counter-clockwise, lift both out, and rinse under hot water with a soft brush. Food film and glass chips collect here and stop the pump from pushing water out. Run the filter through this cleaning once a month and most “not draining” calls disappear.

Step 2: Check the drain hose

The hose runs from the dishwasher pump to the sink drain or garbage disposal. Pull the dishwasher forward a few inches (or look under the sink) and make sure the hose is not kinked or pinched. It should rise in a high loop under the counter before it connects — that loop stops sink water from flowing back into the dishwasher. If the hose is flat or crushed, replace it.

Step 3: Clean the air gap

The small chrome cylinder next to the faucet is the air gap. Pull off its cap, remove the inner cover and clear the debris with a bottle brush. A clogged air gap sends water out of the top of the cylinder onto the counter, which is a common complaint in Central Florida homes with older kitchens.

Step 4: The garbage disposal connection

If the dishwasher stopped draining right after a new disposal was installed, the knockout plug inside the disposal inlet was never removed. Unplug the disposal, disconnect the hose, and punch out the plug with a screwdriver. Also run the disposal for 15 seconds with water before every dishwasher cycle — a full disposal blocks the dishwasher drain.

A new disposal with the knockout plug still in place is the number one cause of a dishwasher that suddenly stopped draining.

Deep-clean the dishwasher while you are at it

  • Run an empty cycle on the hottest setting with a cup of white vinegar on the top rack
  • Wipe the door gasket and the bottom edge of the door, where mold builds
  • Check the spray arms for food stuck in the holes
  • Use a dishwasher cleaner tablet monthly if you have hard water (most of Orlando does)

When it is a plumbing problem, not a cleaning problem

Three signs the dishwasher is fine and the drain is the issue:

  • The kitchen sink drains slowly or gurgles
  • Water comes back into the dishwasher when the sink or disposal runs
  • You cleaned the filter, hose and air gap and it still will not drain

In those cases the clog is in the kitchen drain line or the P-trap under the sink, often grease that has hardened in the pipe. We clear it with a drain machine, and for repeat grease clogs we recommend hydro-jetting, which scours the pipe wall instead of punching a hole through the grease. If the dishwasher pump itself has failed, an appliance technician is the right call — we will tell you which it is.

Frequently asked questions

How often should I clean the dishwasher filter?

Once a month for most households, every two weeks if you do not rinse dishes or have hard water. It takes five minutes and prevents most draining problems.

Can I use drain cleaner in the dishwasher?

No. Chemical drain cleaners damage the pump seals and hoses. Use vinegar or a dishwasher cleaning tablet instead, and clear the drain line mechanically if it is clogged.

Why does water come out of the air gap onto the counter?

The air gap or the hose between it and the disposal is clogged. Clean both; if it keeps happening, the drain line downstream is partially blocked.

Do you repair dishwashers?

We repair and replace the plumbing side — drain lines, supply valves, air gaps, disposals and the dishwasher hookup. If the pump or control board failed, we will tell you so you can call an appliance technician.
